Macbeth

 by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

"Something wicked this way comes"

One of my favorite of Shakespeare's plays, the inpiration came from a very unlikely source - a sequence from Disney's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". I took the imagery from the movie's song "Hellfire" and created the claustrophobic arches based on the hooded figures in Frollo's vision, as he sings "It's not my fault / I'm not to blame / It was the Gypsy girl / The witch that set this flame!" (watch the clip). I designed the lighting to reflect his descent into madness - starting off the play with lots of front light, and slowly progressing over the course of the play to the point where all the main light is coming through the arches from upstage, casting long shadows and breaking up the fluidity of the light.
